Problem

A growing company needs website to meet the needs of both new and existing users.

One Healing Space is a company whose goal is to raise awareness of mental health issues and to provide accessible, affordable, and reliable counseling and therapy services. Founded to help Chinese students studying in Canada who needed mental health services, One Healing Space continues to grow and is now looking to become an online resource for anyone in need.


Defining the project

What do users want and how will we provide it?

Before my team could begin designing the new website, it was important that we understood the space in which we were working.

A quick exercise with shareholders helped us understand their goals for the project, and provide a framework for further research.

 

We then conducted some exploratory research to better understand the issues of need and access to online mental health services, and competitive analysis so we could identify the things that industry leaders were doing well and the things that we felt could be improved upon.

Defining the project - User Interviews

The people have spoken

With a better understanding of what our client wanted and the industry in which we were working, the team conducted a series of remote interviews with current and potential One Healing Space users from around the world. We were interested to discover what factors contributed to their choice of online mental health care services.

Interview subjects also indicated that it would be helpful for a site to have multiple means of navigation. When experiencing a particularly dire need for help, the user should be able to quickly and directly access a particular service. Those users with time on their hands would like a site that offers ease of navigation and more in-depth descriptions of the services provided.


Persona

With the information gathered thus far, the team created a persona that would serve as a proxy for the users we were hoping to attract and devised a problem statement that would define the project’s goals.

While facing life’s many challenges, students and young professionals need affordable and easy access to mental health care services. Online options will not only provide credible therapy sessions, but enable her to join an inclusive community of like-minded people dedicated to promoting mental well-being.

 
 

Ideation

We have the why, now for the how…

Beginning with rough pen & paper sketches, each team member worked on a divergent design idea, refining the design until a low-fidelity wireframe was created. At this point, there is a general idea of what the design will look like as most of the important elements are in place.

The team reconvened with our divergent designs and we then set out to create a single convergent design. As a group, we talked about what we liked and didn’t like about the low-fidelity wireframes, but it was important for us to put the designs in front of some potential users to see what worked and what didn’t. With the feedback from user testing and intra-group analysis, the next step was to create a medium-fidelity prototype.

Conclusion

Moving forward…

Due to the time constraints of this project, my team had to stop after building the medium-fidelity prototype. Had time allowed we would have

  • User tested the prototype

  • Made the appropriate design changes

  • User tested the prototype again

  • Made more design changes

And on and on and on until all parties involved felt the project was ready to move on to a next step (be it a higher fidelity prototype, handing off to a UI team, etc.)
